Career Roles & Responsibilities

Mechanical engineering is considered the ‘mother’ of all branches of engineering. In this context, the roles and responsibilities held by mechanical engineers are different and depend on their area of specialization and the industry they are working for.
In broad terms, the job profile of mechanical engineers can be classified into the following functional segments:

•  Research and Development (R&D): Engineers whose role is to do research and then plan for new machines and their constituent parts.

•  Design: Professionals whose responsibility is to draft technical drawings, manually or with the aid of computers.

•  Production: Engineers who supervise the manufacturing of mechanical components and machines.

•  Analysis and testing: Engineers who analyze and test different types of machines and their parts to ensure that they function flawlessly.

•  Installation: Professionals who install machines and mechanical parts at the client location.

• Maintenance: Engineers whose primary role is to ensure that machinery is working as per specifications.

Career Education Path Summary

Education Required

Mechanical engineers typically need a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology. Mechanical engineering programs usually include courses in mathematics and life and physical sciences, as well as engineering and design. Mechanical engineering technology programs focus less on theory and more on the practical application of engineering principles. They may emphasize internships and co-ops to prepare students for work in the industry.

Eligibility Criteria for Automobile Engineering

The degree of automobile engineering is a four-year engineering degree course in BE or B.Tech programs. The students need to have minimum eligibility of passing their 10+2 board or any equivalent exams from a recognized board with subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as main subjects. The students should have scored a minimum aggregate of 50 percent marks in their board exams to be eligible for admissions. Some of the top prestigious institutes like that of the BITS, IIT’s and the NIT’s require a minimum aggregate score of 60 percent in board exams. The students of diploma in the mechanical and related stream of electrical or electronics can also take admission through lateral entry entrance examinations in the second year of the engineering program after they complete the Diploma. Students with Bachelor's degrees in Science are also eligible for lateral entry in automobile engineering programs.

Automobile Industry is a huge sector and one of the most essential products in every human’s life as without commutation no work is possible. The automobile industry changes every day as new technology arrives and therefore one who studies automobile engineering has to keep themselves updated with the current norms. Even though we know that fossil fuel-driven automobiles are coming to an end in the future, it doesn’t mean the end of the automotive industry. Newer cleaner and environment-friendly technology in automobiles are being developed as without automobiles it is very difficult to accomplish any task of business and development in an economy. Therefore the scope of automobiles has become more extensive and there is a brighter future for all in the automotive industries

Since mechanical engineering is the broadest of all engineering fields, the job prospects on offer for skilled mechanical engineers are aplenty and unending. Mechanical engineers are required to design, test, manufacture, install, operate and maintain a wide array of machines and mechanical systems that are used in countless industries. These professionals can find employment both in the government and private sector undertakings.

Major industries that employ mechanical engineers include automobiles, space research, aeronautical, energy and utilities, air conditioning, bio-mechanical industry. Other major employers include giant manufacturing plants, air conditioning and refrigeration industry, turbine manufacturing plants, oil and gas exploration, and refining industries, and the agricultural sector.

In the government sector, mechanical engineers can provide their knowledge to various government-run projects in the role of technical experts and consultants. They can also work in private engineering companies that provide technical consultancy to both government and corporate firms.

These engineers can also hold high managerial positions in government as well as private sector organisations according to their field of expertise and educational qualifications.
